Tool Room Machinist

Analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machinists’ handtools by performing the following duties.
- Studies specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualizes product to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts.
- Check coolant, way lubes, and/or additional lubricates to maintain machine functionality, make additions as necessary. Notify your supervisor when usage becomes abnormal.
- Computes dimensions, plans layout, and determines assembly method and sequence of operations.
- Measures, marks and scribes metal stock for machining.
- Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes, milling machine, shaper, and grinder, to machine parts, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications.
- Assembles cutting tools in toolholders and positions toolholders in machine spindles as specified or inserts cutting tools in specified machine magazine.
- Manipulates controls and enters commands to indes cutting tool to specified set point and to start machine.
- Lifts machined parts and positions and secures parts on surface plate or worktable.
- Observes and listens to machine operations to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
- Smoothes flat and contoured surfaces and power grinders, and fits and assembles parts together and into assemblies and mechanisms.
- Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances.
- Measures workpiece for conformance to specifications and records on inspection data sheets actual measurements for key characteristics.
- Heat treat tools or parts.
- Examines standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs and fixtures, and recommends design modifications regarding construction and function of part.
- Develops specifications from general descriptions for specialty tools and draws or sketches design of product.
- Notify supervisor of quantity discrepancies, product suspect of nonconformance or fixtures/equipment in need of repair or replacement.
- Ensure documentation is maintained as required by the respective customer’s requirements.
- Machine materials other than metal such as composites, plastic and rubber.
- Inspect and remove foreign objects and debris found during process.
- Ensure product is properly identified (part no., quantity, etc.)
- Return fixtures, tools or equipment back to their normal location, after machine teardown.
- Move or relocate product to the Quality Assurance area for inspection buyoff.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly work environment.
- Inspect and remove foreign objects and debris found during manufacturing process of product.
- Ensure tools and equipment used for recording measurements are calibrated and maintained.
- Ensure hazardous materials and liquids have proper identification, are stored in a safe environment and handled with care.
- Observe safety rules and regulations and wear the required safety equipment.
- Support the Quality Management System to assure compliance to quality, industrial and government standards and regulations.
Education and/or Experience
- Certificate from college or technical school;
- or 3 – 5 years related experience as a General Machinist,
- or a combination of both.
